New Year’s Six Matchups

What to watch for in the world of college football this upcoming weekend:

  • Peach Bowl: Auburn vs UCF @ 12:30 on Jan. 1 (personally, very excited for this matchup)

    • How will undefeated UCF respond to the physicality of the SEC?
    • Emotions will be high on both sides of the ball. Scott Frost is coaching his last game at UCF before he heads off to Nebraska and Auburn’s recovering from their tough loss to UGA in the SEC Championship.
    • There’s no doubt that if these AAC Champions take down the Auburn Tigers there will be lots of buzz on why they should have been included in the CFB Playoffs.

  • Fiesta Bowl: Penn State vs Washington @ 4:00 on Dec. 30

    • New offensive coordinators on both sides of the ball– Once Joe Moorhead left Penn State for the head coaching job at MSU, Ricky Rahne was promoted to OC. As for the Huskies, Bush Hamdan will be busy calling plays for the Atlanta Falcons. Matt Lubick will be stepping in as a placeholder.
    • How will elite running backs Myles Gaskin and Saquon Barkley compare?
  • Orange Bowl: Wisconsin vs Miami @ 8:00 on Dec. 30

    • How will Wisconsin’s running game fare against Miami’s front seven?
    • QB Play– Both Wisconsin QB Alex Hornibrook and Miami QB Malik Rosier have experienced the highs and lows.
    • If Mark Richt’s Hurricanes come out on top, it will be the first time Miami has won consecutive bowl games since 2004-2005.
  • Cotton Bowl: Ohio State vs USC @ 8:30 on Dec. 29

    • Emotions on the Buckeye’s sideline– This game has a little bit of a “letdown” feel to it for OSU. Let’s not forget the playoff committee placing Alabama at #4 over Ohio State.
    • Turnovers– USC has been known to drop the ball a time or two. Will the Buckeyes be able to take advantage?

Now to the two biggest matchups of them all…

  • Rose Bowl: Oklahoma vs UGA @ 5:00 on Jan. 1

    • Potential for UGA’s run game to wear down Oklahoma
  • Sugar Bowl: Clemson vs Alabama @ 8:45 on Jan. 1

    • Nick Saban vs Dabo Swinney– Two of college football’s greatest coaches are meeting once again in a rematch of last year’s national title.
    • Importance of the QB– Both Jalen Hurts and Kelly Bryant are going to be forced to make plays. Odds are this game is going to come down to whichever QB is able to make more.
    • Low scoring battle
